Star Trek: Generations

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D find themselves at odds with the renegade scientist Soran who is destroying entire star systems. Only one man can help Picard stop Soran's scheme...and he's been dead for seventy-eight years.

Critics broadly found the film an entertaining but predictable and overextended franchise crossover whose special-effects spectacle could not fully compensate for weak plotting and heavy reliance on fan familiarity.

• The film brings Captain James T. Kirk and the next-generation Enterprise crew together across generations of Star Trek continuity.
• The mysterious energy ribbon drives the opening disaster and later enables Picard's encounter with Kirk.
• Dr. Tolian Soran destroys entire star systems in pursuit of access to a reality promising continued existence.
• Picard's conflict is inseparable from Kirk's reputation, sacrifice, and eventual return to the action.

• Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khanshared space opera adventure, starship crew dynamics, franchise mythology, and high-concept science fiction
• Star Trek: First Contactshared science fiction action, intergenerational franchise crossover, and large-scale cosmic threat
• Star Trek: The Motion Pictureshared space opera spectacle, heroic leadership, and a crew confronting an existential threat
• Star Trek: The Voyage Homeshared time-bending science fiction, familiar heroic characters, and a reality-threatening cosmic anomaly
