Ghost in the Shell

In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: a human saved from a terrible crash, then cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals.

Critics admire the film's cool visuals and Scarlett Johansson's performance but find that it lacks the depth and philosophical magic of the original source material.

• the Major has no memory of her previous life and searches for who she is inside a mechanical body
• the setting is a stacked pan-Asian metropolis with enormous holographic billboards, praised by critics
• Hanka Robotics secretly developed a full mechanical body connected to a human brain

• Blade Runner 2049shared cyberpunk identity themes, android consciousness, corporate dystopia
• Altered Carbonshared cyberpunk action, human machine identity, neon dystopian city
• RoboCopshared cyborg protagonist, body and mind identity, corporate science fiction
