Batman Returns

In a city shrouded in darkness, a battle for power unfolds between heroes and villains.

Critics were polarized: many praised Tim Burton's visual invention and the performances of Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito, while finding the sprawling plot cluttered and the tone darker and campier than the original.

• Burton's production design of Gotham, its sewers and Christmas-lit rooftops drives the film's identity
• The Penguin and Catwoman are given emotional depth and the film centers them over Batman
• Max Shreck's scheme to manipulate the city's power and energy grid drives the plot
• Bruce Wayne's double life and Selina's split persona structure the narrative

• Batmanshared gothic superhero spectacle, operatic villains and Burton's campy darkness
• Edward Scissorhandsshared gothic fantasy style, grotesque villains and carnival-like dark whimsy
• The Crowshared dark urban crime tone, corrupt power and vigilante anti-hero
