Safe House

A dangerous CIA renegade resurfaces after a decade on the run. When the safe house he's remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead.

Critics generally found the film taut and entertaining, with strong chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington offsetting familiar espionage plotting and uneven action execution.

• The CIA-linked microchip functions as a concrete object around which the pursuit and betrayals revolve.
• Matt Weston’s first major crisis places his limited field experience against Tobin Frost’s expertise and ruthlessness.
• Weston cannot assume that CIA personnel or safe houses offer genuine security while Frost is hunted.
• The safe-house assault, street chases, shootouts, and close-quarters combat create a visibly urgent action style.

• The Bourne Identityshares fast-paced espionage action, fugitive agents, institutional betrayal, and international pursuit
• Three Days of the Condorshares paranoid intelligence intrigue, morally uncertain operatives, and a tense on-the-run structure
• The Departedshares hard-edged spy action, double-crosses, and a veteran operative paired with a younger agent
