Inseparable

It's April of 1986. Pripyat, Ukraine. A core meltdown occurred at Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Power Plant. Over thirty people died during the blast but the estimated death toll as a result of the radiation fallout will reach a four-digit number. This accident will be considered the world’s largest ecological disaster. Set at ground zero of a catastrophe, this film will reveal the details of the Chernobyl event. The shocking news of the explosion at the nuclear plant has spread, as the world watched the tragedy in fear and confusion. Hearts went out to those who displayed selfless courage and integrity in the initial efforts to stabilize the reactor power. But some were too busy being in love to notice what had just happened in nearby Chernobyl. The disaster has faded into the background... This is an account of love and loss, bravery and supernatural stoicism in the face of unbeatable odds.

Inseparable (2013) is a Ukrainian national-television romance drama miniseries created by Vitaly Vorobyev and produced by FILM.UA Group, running four episodes of roughly fifty minutes each. Set in April 1986 in Pripyat, the town beside the Chernobyl Power Plant, the story follows Pavel Derzhavin (Yura Borisov) and Alya Shirokova (Maria Poezzhaeva) as their relationship develops while the reactor meltdown spreads its fear and confusion outward. Supporting characters include Tolik Kuzichev (Maksim Saussalin) and Natasha (Olha Larina), whose lives are tangled up with the couple's. Rather than dramatizing the reactor crew's heroism, the series keeps the catastrophe at the edge of the frame, so that the everyday business of falling in love takes precedence over the unfolding disaster. The engine is simple: two people trying to hold on to each other while a larger tragedy erodes the ground beneath them. Its tone is wistful and melancholic, with a dreamlike, supernatural undercurrent that gives the drama an uncanny stillness. Themes of love and loss, bravery, and the human cost of a hidden catastrophe run throughout. Viewers who enjoyed Chernobyl's portrait of Soviet-era disaster, or the romantic melancholy of Doctor Zhivago, will find resonance here.
