Your Lie in April

Kousei Arima was a genius pianist until his mother's sudden death took away his ability to play. Each day was dull for Kousei. But, then he meets a violinist named Kaori Miyazono who has an eccentric playing style. Can the heartfelt sounds of the girl's violin lead the boy to play the piano again?

Your Lie in April (2014-2015) is a Japanese animated romance drama series created for Fuji TV and produced by A-1 Pictures, a single-season shonen-influenced anime of 22 episodes. Kousei Arima, a once-celebrated child piano prodigy, has frozen at the keyboard since his mother's sudden death, and his grey days are reshaped when he meets Kaori Miyazono, an eccentric violinist with a wildly expressive playing style. Her unpredictable performances pull him back toward music and into a tangle of friendship, rivalry and quiet romance with his classmates Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari. Each episode is built from school life, competitions and rehearsals, where the music itself carries the emotional weight. The atmosphere is luminous and melancholic, with blossoming spring imagery and a soundtrack that swells at key moments. Fans of Clannad, Nodame Cantabile and Toradora! will find the same mix of youthful longing, grief and tender storytelling. Its sincere emotional register makes it a deeply affecting watch for anyone drawn to music-centered coming-of-age stories.

Viewers broadly acclaim the series for its emotionally devastating story, its classical music score and its lush animation, though its single-season audience rating is more modest than its praise suggests.

• Clannadshared tearjerker emotional register, music as healing, young romance shaped by grief
• Nodame Cantabileshared coming-of-age romance with classical music and a prodigy's trauma
