Beautiful Gong Shim

Needing funds to study art abroad, Gong Shim rents out her rooftop room to a pro bono lawyer, who begins shaking up her otherwise dispiriting life.

Beautiful Gong Shim (2016) is a South Korean romantic comedy miniseries created by Baek Su-chan and Nam Tae-jin and broadcast on SBS. Bang Min-ah plays Gong Shim, a young woman saving money to study art abroad who rents out her rooftop room in Seoul to a pro bono lawyer. Namkoong Min plays the lawyer Ahn Dan-tae and the figure Seok Jun-pyo, with On Ju-wan as Seok Jun-su in the orbit of the Seok family. Across twenty hour-long episodes, the engine is simple and warm: a dispiriting routine of money worries and dead-end days gets upended by the messy, awkward closeness of sharing a roof with someone who refuses to let her shrink. Each episode layers everyday comic friction with the pull of a love triangle and a sharp sibling rivalry that complicates who she might end up with. The tone stays cheerful and romantic, with sly bickering, small domestic mishaps and flustered glances carrying most scenes. Viewers who enjoy the cheerful romcom register of Coffee Prince and Boys Over Flowers, or the odd-couple charm of My Love from the Star, will find the same blend of class-tinged comedy and sincere romance here. Its single complete season makes it a self-contained, easy-to-finish watch that rewards patience with its characters.

• Boys Over Flowersromcom tones, opposites-attract romance, sibling rivalry and class-tinged family drama
• Coffee Princelight romantic comedy with a cohabiting-stranger premise and warm, quirky tone
• My Love from the Starlighthearted Korean romcom with a lovable heroine and a love triangle
