Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II

The team behind Frozen II open their doors to cameras for a six-part documentary series to reveal the hard work, heart, and collaboration it takes to create one of the most highly-anticipated films in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ near-century of moviemaking. Cameras were there to capture an eye-opening - and at times jaw-dropping - view of the challenges and the breakthroughs, the artistry, creativity and the complexity of creating the #1 animated feature of all time.

Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II (2020) is a American streaming documentary docuseries produced for Disney+, a six-episode limited series of roughly thirty-three minutes each. It follows the people behind Frozen II, with directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez appearing as on-camera subjects, alongside voices from the cast including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad. The engine of the series is the grind of animation itself: story reworks, songs that must land, and technical problems that threaten a release schedule for a film the studio badly needs to get right. Each episode is a close look at a different stage of the process, from early storyboards to final scoring, so the drama is quiet, not manufactured. The tone is warm, earnest and admiring, with flashes of anxiety when a breakthrough arrives late or a sequence fails in testing. Set in the modern Walt Disney Animation Studios, it is a portrait of collaboration, craft and creative pressure. Fans of Abstract: The Art of Design, Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Pixar's own making-of films will find resonance here. The result is an inviting, family-friendly look at how one of the most anticipated animated films of its era came together.

Audiences broadly acclaim the series as an engaging, warm behind-the-scenes look at how Frozen II was made.
